#1 Understand the Sudbury Model
The Sudbury model is a priceless opportunity to not simply "be taught" but rather to learn through practice the real skills needed for successful learning and living.
If you haven't yet, we highly recommend reading or listening to Free to Learn by Dr. Peter Gray. It's a fantastic introduction to self-directed learning and includes excellent information from his study of Sudbury School graduates. Sudbury families will tell you it's a "Must Read." Enjoy! |
#2 Schedule a Family Tour
We requires the prospective student and all parents and school decision makers are part of these tours and meetings.
It's important for everyone to be "on the same page" for such an exciting new approach to learning. If you would just like some initial information, please call us directly.
These Tours are reserved for the WHOLE family (all parents involved in the student's life plus the student themself) and will be rescheduled if the whole family is not present.
After the tour, prospective students may be invited to schedule a Visiting Week at The Miami Sudbury School, the next step in the enrollment process.

#3 Visiting Week
This is an invaluable week for your child to see the school in action and for everyone to see if it would be a good fit.
The unique nature of our school relies heavily on the right mix of ages and the ability of all students to function cooperatively and productively for the sake of the community. We occasionally find that we aren't able to offer admission to students, possibly due to circumstances related to emotional or behavioral maturity that might make it difficult for a student to flourish in our community. There is a lot of purposeful freedom and trust in a Sudbury community and a student must be ready for that level of personal responsibility.
The main criteria our Community looks for in a prospective student are:
- Are they kind and respectful to everyone?
- Do they follow and respect our Community rules/policies?
- Do we think they’ll be a good addition to our Community?
