School Community in the Time of COVID-19
Our school community eased into this school year to practice both online and on campus protocols, increasing our time on campus incrementally.
We are currently on campus 5 days a week by community vote and commitment to safety for all. We follow CDC recommendations to ensure the highest possible prevention for the lowest risk of infection.
Having a model where individual interests meet community processes, our students should be able to continue their largely self-directed exploration at home while receiving support from staff and fellow students through Zoom and other collaborative platforms. We will make sure that every student has sufficient technology and internet access to make this possible. The students still at school will be able to connect and collaborate with students who must remain at home.
We also know from research and experience that strong social connections help students feel more capable and cushion the effects of disruptions and change. We have a robust program of interpersonal accountability and social responsibility in our school's direct democracy and daily structure. We will continually monitor and address areas of concern, keeping in close communication with students and their families. We will also be particularly paying attention to the emotional/mental health of every student. The school already has weekly School Meetings scheduled to touch base with all students and address any issues found and to process student experience during this uniquely challenging time.
